Question: What to do with old horseshoes?

What can you make out of horseshoes?

Ask your farrier to bend the heels of the #horseshoes out by an inch, and then mount them on a board, heel-up, to use as a coat rack or bridle rack. If you know how to weld, you can make countless items out of old horseshoes, including gate latches, book ends, signs, statues, and even wine holders.

Can horseshoes be recycled?

Recycle them! Most specialty recycling yards accept both aluminum and steel shoes. Some municipalities have even started a horseshoe recycling program.

How do you clean rusty horseshoes?

Place the horseshoe in a plastic container. Add enough white vinegar so that the horseshoe is completely covered. Let it sit for 24 hours, then take it out and scrub it down with a steel wool pad or scrub brush. If the rust is particularly bad, you may need to soak the horseshoe in white vinegar a second time.

How long does it take vinegar to remove rust?

The vinegar-and-salt mixture needs time to break down the rust. This can take anywhere from one to three days. Check the tool periodically to see if the rust has softened. Once the rust has softened, use a metal brush or steel wool to scrub off the surface.

How often do horseshoes need to be replaced?

Horseshoes also need replacing when the horses heel extends past the shoe, the horse has a hoof injury, or the horseshoe is twisted. Typically your horse needs its shoes replaced between four and eight weeks; six weeks is the average.
